Paintball is a sport that requires a lot of thinking and fast action. It is also a great way to develop teamwork and leadership skills and helps relieve stress. It is a safe and fun way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise with friends.
A paintball game consists of two teams with the objective of eliminating opposing players by “tagging” them with capsules of non-toxic and biodegradable water-soluble colored dye embedded in a gelatin outer shell, expelled from a special airgun called a marker. Players wear a protective mask and clothing. They communicate with hand signals and can only shoot at other players in authorized areas. Referees oversee and enforce the safety and playing rules.
There is a real risk of injury in paintball, but it is rare to the point of being unheard of and nearly 100% preventable by wearing the proper gear. Most injuries come from careless players or those who do not use the appropriate gear, and even then it is mostly due to a lack of common sense and a disregard for basic safety rules.
The most common type of paintball equipment includes a gun, mask, barrel cover or plug, and hopper, which holds the paint balls ready to be shot. The gun is a small pistol-like firearm that can fire up to 204.5 feet per second. It has a barrel that extends down the center of the weapon, with side openings that allow pressurized gas to flow through the barrel and fire the paintballs. A sealable valve connects the hopper to the gas chamber and a trigger controls the amount of gas released to fire the ball.
Other gear includes a face mask that protects the player from direct impacts, as well as clothing to provide some concealment and a hat or bandana to keep sweat off of the head inside the mask. Some players may also employ a ghillie or camouflage outfit to blend in more effectively with their surroundings on the field.
In addition to the standard game mode of team death match, some players will play other scenarios including capture the flag, protect the president (where one player is designated as the president and must be protected at all costs), or free-for-all where no teams are formed.
Some of these games may be played on a specialized field designed with natural features such as trees and berms to provide more natural cover for players, or in an indoor facility with walls and other obstacles. There are also specialized scenarios that require more advanced strategic and communication skills, such as flanking (teammates attacking from opposite sides), runners (players who advance quickly to dangerous locations), and leap-frogging (teammates covering attackers from behind). The most important thing for anyone planning on playing paintball is to make sure they have the proper safety equipment and know the basic rules of the game. Only then can they safely experience all the thrills and laughs that this game has to offer.
